About the Course:
In 2019, Newsday, an American daily newspaper serving Nassau and Suffolk counties and the New York City borough of Queens, published the results of a three-year investigation into alleged discrimination by real estate agents in communities on Long Island, New York. A major result of this investigation was the increased need for Fair Housing education among real estate licensees.
The purpose of this class is to provide real estate professionals working in today’s diverse real estate environment with the knowledge and information they need to understand the importance of Fair Housing laws and ensure they are responsibly practicing real estate in a nondiscriminatory manner.
Learning Objectives:
After taking this class, participants will be able to:
• Define and understand the topic of Fair Housing.
• Describe the history of Fair Housing laws and why they are important.
• Understand Florida state- and county-level Fair Housing protections.
• Explain the seven protected classes and the characteristics of each.
• Recognize activities prohibited under Fair Housing laws and identify what actions are illegal.
• Understand how Fair Housing laws affect advertising and marketing and describe best practices.
• Explain steering and redlining and recognize the danger of making assumptions based on stereotypes.
• Define and recognize explicit and implicit bias.
• Explain the effects of bias in Fair Housing and how to prevent it.
• Identify exemptions to Fair Housing laws and understand adherence to reasonable accommodations.
• Know what resources are available to provide Fair Housing information to clients.
